２、１９６４年　マザーグース引用以前　

　この年に発表された歌の中で、マザーグースが引用されているのは２曲。とは言っても、「ダイヤモンドの指輪を買ってあげる」という引用フレーズはあまりにも一般的で、マザーグースを意図的に引用したと断定することは難しい。

　一方、ジョンの最初の本『イン・ヒズ・オウン・ライト』（邦題『絵本ジョン・レノンセンス』）は、この年に出版されている。

ジョンのマザーグース的ナンセンスと言葉遊びの才能は、歌詞としてではなく、まず文学作品として世に出たようだ。

いずれにせよ、この時期は「マザーグース引用以前」と位置づけることができる。

　

①　Can't Buy Me Love　 (1964年1月 rec.)　ポール・マッカートニー　無意識引用

　

　予約の段階でミリオンセラーを記録した初めての作品で、「予約販売数の最も多かったレコード」としてギネスブックに認定されている。アメリカだけで 210万枚の予約があったという。

　なお、 can't は、イギリス英語では [カーント] と発音されるが、アメリカでのセールスを意識して [キャント] と歌われている。
