Europe GP Lap 43 - Montoya
vs M.Schumacher
The Real Fighter |
2nd time of the good battle in 2003. It is fighting of
Montoya and M.Schumacher who fight
for 43th lap of 9th round Eurpoe GP. While the overtaking scene decreased
to the degree very much in the present age F1, when even it will be for a
king, the only fighter Montoya attacks bold. The course change of 2 times
by impatience of a king was looked at by this battle.

2003年の好バトル２回目。第９戦ヨーロッパGPの43周目、２位Ｍ・シューマッハと３位モントーヤの戦いです。現代F1でオーバーテイク・シーンが極度に減った中、たとえ王者相手だろうと、果敢に攻める唯一のファイター、それがモントーヤです。このバトルには、王者の焦りによる2度の進路変更が見られました。

The race of 60 laps also passed over 2/3, and
each car finished the pit stop in which it is the 2nd time. The fuel for
24 laps was stacked, 2nd place M.Schumacher was heavy and 3rd set of tyres
were bad. It was not just able to run after the younger brother of the 1st
place. Conversely, Montoya has pressed back. Montoya had passed
Barrichello and is steadily improving for the 2nd stop.

60周のレースも3分の2を過ぎ、各車が2回目のピットストップを終えた。2位Ｍ・シューマッハは、24周分の燃料を積んで重く、3セット目のタイヤも調子が悪かった。1位の弟を追うどころではなかった。逆にモントーヤが背後に迫ってきた。モントーヤは2回目のストップでバリチェロを抜いて上り調子である。

Michael Schumacher was painful for Montoya
to have been caught up with. It was going to stretch and attach, was going
to run to the inside at all corners, and was going to protect the 2nd
place frantically. If this place has been endured, it may be guarded to
the last. Whatever it might say, the temper that overtaking could not be
easily carried out on a course must also have had Ferrari which was proud
of the fastest.
By the 9th game of a season cuff, Ferrari felt Williams's threat from
experience. Although it thought that the grade with a rival packed a merit
difference, a thought was not carried out to catching up early like this,
either. Such a thing is not expected. We must still be quick.

ミヒャエル・シューマッハはモントーヤに追いつかれて苦しかった。あらゆるコーナーをインベタで走り、必死に2位を守ろうとしていた。この場をしのぎきれば、最後まで抑えられるかもしれない。何と言っても、最速を誇ったフェラーリが、コース上でやすやすとオーバーテイクされるわけにはいかないという意地もあったはずだ。
シーズン折り返しの第9戦で、フェラーリはウィリアムズの脅威を肌で感じた。ライバルがある程度は実力差を詰めてくるとは思っていたが、こんなに早く追いついてくるとは思いもしなかった。こんなはずじゃない。まだまだわれわれは速いはずだ。

Next, it is a right corner (Dunlop curve).
Michael brought near the car by the inside a little early with the short
straight. Since Montoya intimated an intention to hear about an inside, it
responded to it. But, here was miscalculation. The Dunlop curve is a tight
hairpin. It is painful from an inside to turning. You have to slow down
quite a little early. It may lose at braking competition. Williams's brake
had become the powerful material from Monaco.

次は右コーナー（ダンロップ・カーブ）だ。ミヒャエルは短いストレートで早めにイン側へ車を寄せた。モントーヤがイン側をうかがう素振りを見せたので、それに呼応したのだ。だが、ここに誤算があった。ダンロップ･カーブはタイトなヘアピンである。インから回り込むには苦しい。かなり早めに減速しなければならない。ブレーキング競争で負けてしまう可能性がある。ウィリアムズのブレーキがモナコから強力な素材になっていた。

And taking advantage of BMW power, Montoya

しかも、モントーヤがBMWパワーを生かしてストレートで並びかけようとしてくる。まずい、このままでは抜かれる。ミヒャエルはコース中央に向かって車を戻した。モントーヤを威嚇するように近寄ったのだ。だが、これは2度の進路変更にあたる。ドライビング・マナーでは、それはしてはならないことだ。ミヒャエルの寄せはそれ以上できなかった。モントーヤはミヒャエルの幅寄せにひるむこともなく、アクセル全開でいく。

Two sets are located in a line and go into
the Dunlop corner. Montoya's overtaking from outside was disadvantageous.
However, the braking was delayable. Montoya comes out in front by nose,
and turns around a corner. The space was left to the inside for Michael.
Michael does not have a straight angle. Michael swells to out in
understeering feeling. The front wing of Michael was equivalent to the
right front tire of Montoya.

2台は並んでダンロップコーナーへ入っていく。モントーヤはアウトから抜くのは不利だった。しかしブレーキングを遅らせることが出来た。モントーヤが鼻差で前に出て、コーナーを回り込む。ミヒャエルのためにイン側にスペースを空けておいた。一方のミヒャエルは曲がる角度がない。ミヒャエルはアンダーステア気味にアウトへふくらむ。ミヒャエルのフロントウィングがモントーヤの右フロントタイヤに当たった。

Michael lost the control, and spun slowly.
Montoya was not losing after hit.

"I thought Juan Pablo's overtaking manoeuvre was the sort that we
should see every race, every time. That is the way it should be done - you
know: 'watch out when Juan's about'. It's tough to call on Michael and I
am not gloating, but few people sadly overtake where Juan Pablo ever dares
to overtake. Television needs racing, a lot of racing, a lot of
overtaking, not 'after you mate'."

ミヒャエルはコントロールを失い、ゆっくりとスピンしてしまう。モントーヤは当たり負けしなかった。

「ファンパブロのオーバーテイク・ドライビングは、われわれが毎レース、毎回見たかったものだ。あれがやるべきことなんだよ。君らもファンを見ただろう。ミヒャエルを抜くのは大変だ。私は単にながめてるわけじゃない。だが、悲しいかな、オーバーテイクする奴なんかいない。ファン・パブロはあえてオーバーテイクする奴なんだ。テレビはレーシングを必要としている。たくさんのレーシング、たくさんのオーバーテイクをだ。仲良く走ってることじゃないんだよ。」

Michael was caught by gravel. Although it is
pushed on Marshall and it was able to return to the course, it was late
from Montoya 40 seconds or more, and has fallen to the 6th place. In
addition, the push start became the interpretation which does not become
disqualification in the present age.
Michael was finished by the 5th place, added four points, and extended the
lead of a championship. But as far as it is related with this battle,
Michael would also have the way of pulling and securing the 3rd place. But
the figure in which was fought and the battle was lost proved that F1 had
rustled. I want to send applause also to loser Michael. And it desires to
get even.

ミヒャエルはグラベルにつかまった。マーシャルに押されてコースに復帰することが出来たが、モントーヤから40秒以上も遅れて6位に落ちてしまった。なお、プッシュスタートは現代では失格にはならない解釈となった。
ミヒャエルは5位でフィニッシュし、4点を加えて選手権のリードを広げた。とはいえ、このバトルに関する限り、ミヒャエルは引いて3位を確保する手もあったろう。だが戦ってバトルに負けた姿は、F1が戦いであることを証明してくれた。敗者ミヒャエルにも拍手を送りたい。そして、雪辱することを望む。

Ralf would not overtake an elder brother in
Canada. If a just reason is in it, many people defend Ralf. But, Ralf does
not even have having devised also once to the elder brother to there being
a fact that Montoya overtook Michael in 2001 at Brazil and the United
States, in 2002 Australia, and this time. Facts for three years can be
explained how. Montoya is just a true fighter.

カナダでラルフは兄を抜こうとしなかった。それには正当な理由があると多くの人がラルフを弁護する。だが、モントーヤが2001年のブラジルとアメリカ、2002年のオーストラリア、そして今回と、ミヒャエルをオーバーテイクした事実があるのに対し、ラルフは兄に1度も仕掛けたことすらない。3年間の事実をどうやって説明できるのだ。モントーヤこそ、真のファイターだ。
