Isen'in Kano (1775-1828)
Kano painter. Born in Musashi Province. Pupil of his father, Yosen'in Kano Korenobu, whom he succeeded as seventh- generation head of the Kobikicho branch of the Kano school in Edo. Official painter to the shogunate; in 1802, given rank of Hogen and in 1816 that of Hoin, at which time he took the name of Isen'in. Closely associated with the tea master Fumai Matsudaira. Invented technique of putting gold dust in ink. A painter of considerable talent, following the style of his ancestor Tsunenobu Kano, often working in a free, sketchy manner.
