Naonobu Kano (1607-1650)
Kano painter. Born in Kyoto; worked in Kyoto and Edo. Son of Takanobu Kano, younger brother of Tanyu; pupil of both. Also studied under Koi Kano. In 1623 appointed Goyo Eshi to General's court. In 1626 worked with Tanyu for Iemitsu in Nijyo Castle. Summoned to Edo in 1630, where he was given an estate and founded the Kobikicho branch of the Kano family. Instructed the General Hidetada in painting. He and Tanyu the two great Kano artists of the early Edo period. Painted in ink, using broad free brush strokes and light color washes. A painter of considerable elegance.
