2003年のグリッドは、かなりバラエティに富んでいた。前年はPPがフェラーリとウィリアムズの2チームで独占されたが、今年はマクラーレンとルノーもPPを2回ずつ獲得した。特にルノーは前年に最高で6番手だったが、今年はフロントロー3回、2列目4回を記録した。また、前年に2列目までは3強が独占していたが、今年はザウバー、ジャガー、トヨタも食い込んだ。逆に、フェラーリが4列目に沈むことが5回もあった。 もちろん、混沌の最大の原因は今年の新ルールであろう。1ラップしかないアタックに加えて、レースの燃料を搭載しなければならなくなったことで、戦略の要素が加わった。その影響はどのくらいあったか、GPごとに見ていこう。 |
The grid in 2003 was
considerably rich in variety. In the previous year, PPs has
been monopolized in two teams, Ferrari and Williams. But in this year,
McLaren and Renault also gained PP by a unit of 2 times. Although
especially Renault was No. 6 in the highest in the previous year, three
front rows and 2 sequence 4 times were recorded this year. Moreover,

燃料搭載量でPPが決まったGP マレーシア PPのアロンソは14周分の燃料を積んでいた。3番手M・シューマッハは1周目の事故で搭載量が不明。フェラーリは年間を通じて2台の搭載量が1周程度しかなく、バリチェロが22周だったことから、シューマッハが21周分は積んでいたと予想できる。それはアロンソより7周多く、20kgの重量差になり、0.6秒のハンディになる。アロンソとシューマッハの予選の差が0.349秒だったから、同じ燃料搭載量ならM・シューマッハがPPだった。 モナコ PPのR・シューマッハは21周分の燃料を積んでいた。2番手ライコネンは25周分と4周も多かった。それは0.2秒のハンディになり、予選タイム差の0.036秒より大きかった。また、トゥルーリやM・シューマッハも重い燃料を積んでいたが、全車が同じ重量だったら、ライコネンにはかなわなかったと見られる。同じ燃料搭載量ならライコネンがPPだった。 ヨーロッパ PPのライコネンは16周分の燃料を積んでいた。3番手R・シューマッハは21周分と5周も多かった。それは0.4秒のハンディになり、予選タイム差の0.096秒より大きかった。同じ燃料搭載量ならR・シューマッハがPPだった。 |

こうして見ると、かなり燃料の影響は受けたように見える。だが、PPは取ったり取られたりで、各ドライバーの総数はさほど変わらないようにも見える。前半はフェラーリが速かったし、後半はウィリアムズが速かった。それはマシンの相対的な力関係の変化が現れた。新予選が実力をまったく無視してランダムになったとは言えないだろう。 下に前年の全GPトップ6グリッドを示す。前年がいかに固定的であったかがわかる。逆に言うと今年はルノーや下位チームが上位に入り込む余地が多くなった。そのために3強がレース中に詰まったり、オーバーテイクしたり、変化が多かった。 |

新予選はレースを面白くすることに効果はあったのだ。前年までの予選の醍醐味がなくなったデメリットはあった。だが、それよりも主要なイベントである日曜のレースに活気を与えることになった。土曜の時点でわからない燃料搭載量は、ミステリー的要素となり、レースを読む材料にもなった。 2004年の予選も燃料搭載や1ラップは続く。これに対してチームからの反対はなかった。チームは、ルールは毎年変えるなと言っているだけだ。海外のニュースサイトやフォーラムを見ても、異議は見られない。 今一度なぜルールを変える必要があったのか考えてみる。F1が肥大化したのに反して人気は下火になった。視聴率低下・観客減・スポンサー撤収という事実は、主催者からすれば危機的状況である。カナダ、フランス、ブラジルなどが開催さえ危ぶまれるようになった。極端な話、日本でTV中継されなくなることだってありえるのだ。 資金の豊富なチームがグリッド上位を占め、レースも淡々と進む。チーム内にはオーダーさえ存在する。始まる前から結果が予想できてしまう。これでは誰も見なくなってしまう。それが2002年だった。 単にノスタルジーで昔は良かったから戻せというだけでは何も解決しない。むしろ、今後のF1はどうあるべきかを考えて改善していかなければならない。 |
