YASAKA SHRINE

全国祗園社の総本社。四条通が東大路通に突き当たる正面に朱塗りの西桜門（国の重文）を構える。京都に流行した疫病を鎮めるために創建されたと伝わり、厄除け、商売繁盛の神として知られている。国の重文の本殿は祗園造りと呼ばれる独特の建築様式で、１６５４年に再建されたもの。舞殿にはお茶屋や料亭などの奉納提灯が並び、華やかな雰囲気を漂わせている。”祗園さん”の愛称で親しまれている同社の祭礼には、７月に行われる日本三大祭りの１つである祗園祭や、大晦日の夜に行われるおけら参りがある。

This historic shrine was founded in the 9th century. Its original name was Gion Jinja shrine, and it enshrined a talisman and the God of Merchants. Yasaka Jinja gets some of the biggest crowds in Japan during New Year's.People come dressed in their finest kimono to pray for good fortune in the new year. The orange west gate has become a symmbol of the shrine, and has been designated an Important Cultural Property. The procession of the famous Gion festival, held in July, starts at Yasaka Jinja.
