CHISHAKU-IN

真言宗智山派の総本山。豊臣秀吉が長男鶴松の菩提を弔うために建てた祥雲寺と豊国社の一部を合わせて、徳川家康が紀州根来寺の智積院に与えたもの。中国の魯山を模したという書院の東に広がる庭園は国の名勝。長谷川等伯一門の障壁画が有名。

華麗な桃山文化を伝える寺

This temple was built in the early part fo the Edo period on the ruins of Shounji Temple, which Hideyoshi Toyotomi built for the saying of masses for his deceased son. The Shusoko Hall fatures painted walls and sliding doors which depict cherry blossoms, red maple leaves, and other natural beauty. These painting were made by the Tohaku Hasegawa school of painters, and are representative of the Momoyama style. The garden is at its best when the azaleas are in full bloom in mid-May.
