SHOURENIN　TEMPLE

天台宗三門跡寺院の一つで、天明の大火の際に仮皇居となったことから粟田口御所とも呼ばれる。相阿弥作といわれる池泉水回遊式庭園は、後に小堀遠州が手を加えた名園。

粟田山を借景にした名園

The Priest Gogen moved the Shorendo Hall from Mt.Hiei to the present site at the end of the Heian period. After the imperial palace burned down in 1788, Emperor Kokaku leved in the hall for a period of time, and it is now known as Awata Palace. It has two lwvely gardens; one was made by Soami(creator of Ryoanji's rock garden), and the other was made by Enshu Kobori(creator of the Ninomaru garden at Nijojo).
