SHIMOGAMO-SHRINE

古代の豪族・賀茂氏の始祖を祀る京都最古の社。上社の上賀茂神社と合わせて賀茂神社ともいう。正式には賀茂御祖神社という。毎年５月１５日には葵祭りが行われる。２０００年前の原生林が残る境内は散歩にもいい。

This historic shrin, the oldest in Kyoto, was built before Kyoto became the capital of Japan in 794. It is located in the huge Adashinomori forest. This shrine was dedicated along with Kamigamo Jinja Shrine to the Goddess of Kamogawa river. The two shrines are considered as one; hence, their festivals are held on the same day. One of the biggest festivals, Aoi, takes place on May 15th.
