RAKUSHISHA HUT

This was the hut of poet Kyorai Mukai early in the Edo period, and was rebuilt by poet Shigeatsu Inoue during the Meiji period. It's roof was made of straw.Rakushisha Iiterally means "the house of the fallen persimmons." The story is that one day the resident of the house decided to sell the ripe persimmons on the tree, but found that they had been blown to the ground by a strong wind during the night. The great poet, Matsuo Basho, visited the hut in 1689. There is a monument to Kyorai's poetry in the garden, and Kyorai's simple grave is in the backyard.
