KIYOMIZUDERA　TEMPLE

京洛屈指の名刹で、音羽山の中腹を占める境内には３０近い伽藍がある。

「清水の舞台から飛び降りる」のたとえで有名な舞台造りの本堂からは京都が一望。

春は桜、秋は紅葉の景観がすばらしい。

This is one of the most popular tourist sites in Kyoto. This temple is said to have been built in 778 by Sakanoue no Tomuramaro, ruler of the area at that time. The temple is located on the slopes of Mt.Otowa, and covers 120 thousand square meters. Most of he present halls date from the rebuilding done in 1633 by Iemitsu Tokugawa, third shogun of the Edo Period. The main hall is a National Treasure. Constructed without a single nail, this hall includes the famous Kiyomizu veranda, which affords visitors a view of the Kiyomizu grounds against the backdrop of Kyoto in the destance. The largest three-storied pagoda in Japan is on the grounds.
