THE GOLDEN PAVILION・ROKUON-JI TEMPLE

足利三代将軍義満が、別荘北山殿として造営。死後、夢窓国師を招き、義満の法号にちなんで鹿苑寺とした。仏舎利殿・金閣は昭和６２年１１月に改修を終え、豪華で壮麗な姿を鏡湖池にうつしている。池泉回遊式庭園は特別名勝・特別史跡。

The third shogun of the Muromachi period, Yoshimitsu Ashikaga, renovated the villa. After Yoshimitsu's death, Muso Kokushi converted the villa into a Zen temple. The three-storied Kinkaku building was rebuilt in 1955 after being burnt down by a studentmonk. The outer walls of the second and third floors are coverd with gold foil, and the building is crowned by a gold phoenix, The garden is in the Muromachi period style.
