建仁寺

KENNINJI TEMPLE

This temple was built by Priest Eisai, the founder of Rinzai Buddhis, in 1202 as the first temple of his sect in Kyoto. The location of this temple was thought to be very good, since it was close to both the regional headquarters of the Minamoto, currently in power, and those of the Taira, the previous shogunate family, who had lost power in 1185, The temple's Chokushi-mon Gate, which is an Important Cultural Property and is unusual in having four legs, was originally part of the Taira headquarters. This temple was rebuilt during the Edo period(1600-1868). Many cultural properties belong to the temple, as well as a National Treasure, a folded screen painting of "the God of Wind and the God of the Thunder"by Sotatsu Tawaraya.
