JAKKOIN TEMPLE

高倉帝皇后で安徳天皇の母、建礼門院徳子が、平家一門の菩提を弔いながら隠棲した天台宗の尼寺。本尊地蔵菩薩立像の脇には建礼門院と阿波内待像が安置されている。紅葉の名所としても有名。

平成１２年５月９日の火災により、現在拝観休止！

Prince Shotoku dedicated this temple to he soul of his deceased father in 594. 6000 miniature Buddhas were placed inside the sculptured Jizo in the tmple. Jakko-in is famous for its role in the Heike Monogatari. The sole survivor of the defeated Taira clan, Empress Kenreimonin, chose this temple as her hermitage and had masses said for the deceased members of her family here. Jakko-in is particulary lovely in the autumn.
