HIGASHIHONGANJI TEMPLE

京都の人々に”お東さん”と親しまれている、真宗大谷派の本山。慶長７年（１６０２年）、徳川家康寄進の地に、第１２代教如上人が西本願４００ｍ余、東西２００ｍ余。高大な敷地に巨大な建物が立ち並び、中心である御影堂は世界最大級の木造建築だ。堂内には浄土真宗の開祖・親鸞聖人の像が安置されている。また阿弥陀堂への渡り廊下には、両堂を再建する際、巨材を引く為に門徒の髪をより集めて作った「毛綱」が展示されている。

Nishi and Higashi-Honganji Temple were originally parts of one whole, but they were separated by Ieyasu Tokugawa, the first shogun of the Edo period, who worried about their great religious power. The immense wooden Taishido Hall, which inshrines a statue of Shinran, the founder of Jodo-Shin. Buddhism, and the wooden main hall, which enshrines a statue of Amida, are famous all over the world, Admission is free.
