HEIANJINGUU

平安遷都１１００年を記念して明治２８年に建てられたもので、桓武天皇と孝明天皇を祭神とする。社殿は平安京の大内裏の正殿である朝堂院を、８分の５に縮小して造られた珍しいもの。朱塗りの柱に碧色の瓦という、古都の空にあでやかにはえる色彩や、重厚なたたずまいで京都市民にも観光客にも親しまれている。東・中・西・南の４つからなる広大な神苑には、植治こと小川治兵衛作の池泉回遊式庭園があり、サクラ・フジ・ツツジ・ハナショウブ・スイレン・ハギ、そして紅葉と、四季折々美しい花木に彩られる。１０月２２日には時代祭が行われる。

This shrine is a reduced scale replica of the original Imperial Palace of the 8th century. It was built in 1895 in commemoration of the 1100th anniversary of Kyoto, and enshrines Emperors Kanmu and Komei. The spacious garden, featuring a pond dotted with stepping stones, attracts many visitors, both Japanese and non-Japanese, especially when te Irises are n full bloom. The people of Kyoto are justy proud of this beautiful garden. The Jidai Festival is held here on October 22nd each year.
