MAIN GATE OF THE IMPERIAL PALACE

かつてはこの門の前に高麗門があったが、明治２０年の宮殿造営の祭撤去され、現在は写真の渡櫓門のみとなっている。

Nishinomaru Front Gate of the former Edo Castle. This gate is passed ajter crossing a stone bridge and the Imperial Palace is reached by way of an iron bridge.

STONE BRIDGE and STEEL BRIDGE

昔はそれぞれ木橋であったが、上の橋は明治２０年に石造りに下の橋は明治２１年に鉄の橋にそれぞれ架けかえられた。名前の由来は下の橋の橋桁が二重に組んであったことから二重橋と呼ぶようになったが、現在はこの二つの橋を総称して二重橋と通称している。

TENSHU-DAI(DONJON BASE)

江戸城の天守閣は、慶長１１年から２年間にわたり建設され完成した。基礎の一辺の長さ４４メートル四方、高さ１８メートル、その上には金色のシャチを頂く五層の天守がそびえていたが、１６５７年の大火で焼失して以来再建されていない。

Tenshu-dai, or foundation for the main donjon, is located in the north corner of Honmaru, just inside the Kitahanebashi-mon. Its widthe from east to west is 41 meters, its length from north to south 45 meters, and it height is 11 meters. A five-story donjon used to stand on thi base which made its total height 51 meters, and was the highest donjon in Japan at the time. The five-story, roofed donjon with golden ornaments was built in 1607 and is believed to have been magnificent. However, a fire in 1657 destroyed the donjon completely and only the stone foundation was reconstructed.
