GIOJI TEMPLE

This is a Shingon Buddhist nunnery, which was built during the Meiji Period on the ruins of a hermitage. This hermitage was the place to which Princess Gio, her sister Gijo, their mother Toji, and a girl named Shiravyoshi retreated after the Princess lost the affection of the ruler at the time, Taira-no Kiyomori. Wooden statues of the women, who died here, ane of Kiyomori are displayed. The grounds are covered with moss and the location evokes particularly poignant feelings during the autumn, when the leaves turn.
