GINKAKUJI-TENPLE（SILVER　PAVILION)

足利義政が東山殿として造営、義政の死後、臨済宗の寺となった。義政の法名（慈照院）から「慈照寺」と名付けられた。造りは書院造りで東山文化の代表的なものと言える。庭園は善阿弥の作で、砂盛りの銀沙だんと向月台は月待山に登る月を鑑賞する為のもの。

※室町時代のシンボルだった禅寺で、東山文化の真髄を今に伝える名刹。

This temple, originally named Higashiyama Villa, was built in 1489 by shogun Yoshimasa Ashikaga, following the tradition fo the Kitayama Villa which was built by his grandfather Yoshimitsu. Yoshimasa was unable to complete his plan of coating the pavilion with silver foil due to a lack of funds.Muso Soseki converted the site into a temple. The pavilion itself is quite lovely, if not as dramatic as its golden counterpart. The garden, which has a section with sand forms and a section with a lake, trees nad stomes, is lovely year round.
