FUSHIMI-MOMOYAMA CASTLE

Hideyoshi Toyotomi built Fushimi castle in 1594 as a place to live in his old age. It was razed twice, once by an ertquake, and once by the famous civil war battle at Sekigahara. After 1600 , the area became Tokugawa territory and Fushmi Castle ceased to be a working castle. The main buildings and gates were moved to varous castles nad temples around Japan. Since the area was full of peach trees in those days, it was know by the name Momoyama. The Fushimi-Momoyama Castle that w can visit today was built on the ruins of the original Fushii castle's site.It is still decorated with dragon faced fish to ward off evil, as well as 8000 goldcolored tiles on the roof which are reminiscent of the opulent Momoyama period.
