DAIKAKUJI TEMPLE

嵯峨天皇の離宮を寺に改め、代々の法親王が住持した門跡寺院。亀山、後宇多天皇が院政を行ったので嵯峨御所と呼ばれ、それぞれの堂宇が回廊で結ばれた寝殿造りは当時の貴族好みがうかがえる。

This temple was the residence of Emperor Saga, and was known as the Saga Palace, before it was converted into a Zen temple in 876. It is famous fo the paintings on the walls and sliding doors, done by Sangaku Kano and wther artists. The temple is also famed for its Flower Arrangements and the Saga chrysanthemums that bloom there in Nomber. The garden, which centers around the Osawa no Ike lake, is a good place for viewing the moon or enjoying cherry blossoms.
