人生の青春

青春は人生のある時期をいうのではなく、心のあり方をいう。　それは激しい意志の力、想像力、情熱、臆病ではなくたくましい勇気を持つこと、そして惰性をむさぼるのではなく冒険に対するあくなき渇望、これが青春である。
人は、年月とともに老いるものではない。　人は、理想を捨てるときにはじめて老いがくる。　年月は皮膚のしわをつくるが、やる気を失うとき、魂のしわがきざまれ始める。　心配したり、疑ったり、自信喪失や恐れや絶望、こういうものが人を老いさせ、生きる力をうしなはしめる。
あなたが七〇歳であろうと一六歳であろうと、あなたの心の中に感激があり、感動があり、チャレンジ精神があり、新しいものに対する子供のような希求心があり、人生の喜びがあればあなたの若さは保たれる。
あなたは信念があるだけ若く、疑いがあるだけ老いる。
あなたは自信があるだけ若く、恐怖があるだけ老いる。
あなたは希望があるだけ若く、絶望があるだけ老いる。
あなたの心が美しく、悦びと勇気と偉大さと大いなる力をこの地上から、人間から、そして神からくみ取るならば、あなたは若い。　これらがなくてあなたの心が悲嘆の雪と冷笑の氷に閉ざされるとき、あなたはその時こそ年をとり、神の恵みに支えられなければならぬようになるのだ。

Youth is not a time of life−−it is a state of mind;it is a temper of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions, a predominance of courage over timidity, of the appetite for adventure over love of ease.
Nobody grows old by merely living a number of years; people grow old only by deserting their ideals. Years wrinkle the skin,but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry,doubt,self-distrust,fear and despair-these are the long,long years that bow the head and turn the growing spirit back to dust. Whether seventy or sixteen, hre is in every being's heart the love of wonder, the sweet amazement at the stars and the starlike things and thoughts,the undaunted challenge of events, and the joy and the game of life.
You are as young as your faith ,as old as your doubt;as young as your self-confidence,as old as your fear,as young as your hope,as old as your despair. So long as your heart receives messages of beauty, cheer, courage,grandeur and power from the earth,from man and from the Infinit,so long you young.
When the wires are all down and all the central place of your heart is covered with the snows of pessimism and the ice of cynicism,then you are grown old indeed and may God have mercy on your soul.
