『古事記』は、神道（日本民族宗教）の二つの主要な出典のうちの一つです。もう一つは『日本書紀』です。『古事記』の記述は、泡から日本の国が建設され、神話から始まります。 数えきれない神と女神が記述されています。
物語は、神話から歴史の伝説へ移って、初期の王朝から、順次天皇の系譜が綴られています。
