The Commonwealth of Massachusetts is a state in the New England region of the north eastern
part of United States. The majority of 6.4 million people live in the Boston metropolitan area.
The United States Bureau of Economic Analysis estimates that Massachusetts's gross state
product in 2007 was US $351 billion. The per capita personal income in 2006 was US$47,702,
making it the fourth highest in the nation.

Boston is the capital and one of the oldest cities in the United Stated. It is also the largest city
in New England Areas. Boston is considered the economic and cultural center of the region.
The population of the city is estimated as about 610,000.



Smoking is banned in all enclosed public places and workplaces,
including restaurants and bars.

Massachusetts smoking ban: Effective in July, 2004, smoking is banned in all enclosed public places
and workplaces, including restaurants and bars. The law exempted the following categories:
Private clubs when not open to the public, private residences, unless when used as a business for
healthcare or childcare, designated hotel/motel smoking rooms, retail tobacco stores, licensed cigar
or hookah bars, stage performances involving smoking, places where smoking-related scientific
research is occurring, religious ceremonies involving smoking, outdoor areas, designated areas in
nursing homes as approved by the state, and other tobacco-related workplaces such as farms and
distributors.

Local governments and boards of health may regulate smoking more strictly than the state.
In February, 2009, Boston banned by the Boston Public Health Commission on outside patios of
bars and restaurants. Further, smoking is totally banned in all hotel rooms in the city of Boston.

バックベイ地域はかってはチャールズ川の浅瀬を埋め立て造成された。いまでは生命保険会社の
高層ビルが競い合い、米国最大規模の図書館で蔵書500万冊以上保有するボストン公共図書館、
アメリカ建国100周年記念して1876年にオープンしたボストン美術館など必見の建物も少なくない。

ボストン近郊にはアメリカ最古の大学で,多くの政治家などを世に送り出しているハーバード大学や、
ハイテク、バイオテクノロジー、医学の分野でも世界最先端の研究をリードしているマサチューセッツ
工科大学を始め、沢山の大学、研究機関がある。

A Boston subway provides a convenient access to many interesting spots.

職場、レストラン、カフェ、バーは全面禁煙となっている。違反者には100ドルの罰金、10日以内の
懲役、またはその双方を科すると表示している。


Smoking is banned in all hotel rooms in the city of Boston.

We used the Hilton Boston Logan Airport and Jurys Boston Hotel when stayed in Boston. Both hotels prohibit
smoking inside and a hotel guest must go out of the hotel to put light on cigarette. We confirmed that
the Marriott* hotel and Westin hotel** are smoke-free as well, and there is no smoking-room or booth inside
of a hotel. Because of a strict smoking ban, a few men and women are smoking in the shadows of building.

Boston has become one of the first major cities in the nation to ban smoking in the privacy of any hotel room.
After January 2009, all rooms in the city of Boston became non-smoking. The Boston Public Health Commission
board announced that the board voted to expand workplace smoking restrictions to include adjacent areas
such as patios and loading docks, and to prohibit smoking in hotels, inns, and bed and breakfasts in Boston.

Entirely smoke-free public housing

The Boston Housing Authority plans to open more than 100 smoke-free public housing units
in a rebuilt section of Old Colony slated for completion in 2012, in keeping with a vow by Mayor,
Thomas Menino to have entirely smoke-free public housing by 2014.

街区にある。街全体が大学の敷地で清潔な学園都市である。

Tufts Medical Center is a world-class academic medical center.

大学および病院喫煙規制情報 　外来患者であろうか、病院入口から少し離れている歩道で数人の男女が
喫煙していた。病院内は勿論全面禁煙であるが、どうしてもタバコを手放せない人も少なくないようである。
病院が用意したスタンド灰皿は喫煙禁止表示の文面とは矛盾して出入口から10メートル以内の位置に
置いてあった。「near entrance」とは数メートルの範囲を指すのであろうか。

病院は沢山の患者と面会人でごったかえしていた。中に売店もあり特別なチェックもなく、個別の外来の配置
などを見て回ることが出来た。しかし、患者などのプライバシー保護のためか、写真撮影は禁止されている。
病院内部の通路に掲示板があったが内容は様々だ。「Tabacco Treatment Service」 が勧める禁煙への
勧誘掲示も見受けられた。
