Crater Lake National Park
Salem is the Oregon state's capital and third-most-populous city. Portland
is the largest city, with
an estimate population of about 580.000. A total population in the state
of Oregon is 379,000 in 2008.
Oregon enjoys a diverse scenic landscape. It consists of the pacific coast
line, the volcanoes of
rugged and glaciated Cascade Mountain range, dense evergreen forests, and
a partial desert area
across the eastern portion of the state.

Crater Lake National Park is located in southern Oregon. This National
Park was established in 1902.
This park encompasses the Crater Lake caldera, which rests in the remains
of a destroyed volcano
and the surrounding forest land and hills. The lake is in 594 m depth,
which makes it the deepest lake
in the United States. Crater Lake has no streams flowing into or out of
it. All water that enters the lake
is eventually lost from evaporation or subsurface seepage. The lake's water
commonly has a striking
blue hue, and the lake is re-filled entirely from direct precipitation
in the form of snow and rain.

オレゴン州のレストラン、カフェ、バーは全面禁煙 オレゴン州は北米西海岸に面し、北は
ワシントン州、南はカリフォルニア州に挟まれた人口、380万人ほどの地域である。オレゴン州は
降雨量が多く、豊かな森林に恵まれ、木材生産量は全米第一である。筆者は1962年8月に
自分の車でこの地を訪れているが、日本でも見られるような海岸線や山々が遠くに見え隠れする
美しい土地である。州南部の山岳地帯にあるクレーター国立公園の火山湖は水深、594メートル
とアメリカ合衆国内で一番深い。
最大の都市はポートランド( Portland )で、オレゴン大学のあるのがユージーン( Eugene )で、
オレゴン州内で２番目に大きな都市圏である。このユ−ジーンで2001年７月に喫煙規制法
( Clean Air Act ) が施行され、すべての公共施設、レストラン、バーが全面禁煙となった。
オレゴン州全体をカバーする受動喫煙防止法は、2009年1月から施行され、すべての閉鎖公共
空間、レストラン、バー、居酒屋での喫煙が禁止される。シガーバーとホテルの客室は全体の
２５％以内の範囲で喫煙客室として認められている。

Oregon Indoor Clean Air Act
Smoke-free Workplace Law Oregon took effect in January 2009.
Under Oregon's Smoke-free Workplace Law, smoking is prohibited in most
public places and
work places.
Place of employment means every enclosed area under the control of a public
or private
employer that employees work frequently during the employment.
Workplaces and public places that must be smoke-free include but are not
limited to:
- Bars and taverns, including bar areas of restaurants
- Bowling centers
- Bingo halls
- Private and fraternal organizations
- Employee break rooms
- Restaurants
- Private offices and commercial office buildings
- Retail and wholesale establishments
- Manufacturing plants and mills
- Truck stops
- Child and adult day-care
- Assisted living facilities
- Movies theaters and indoor entertainment venues
- Hotels and motels (Exception: up to 25% of guest rooms may be designated
- as smoking rooms by the owner or entity in command )
- Work vehicles that are not operated exclusively by one employee.
Most bars complying with Oregon smoking ban
Despite some grumbling by smokers and bar owners, Oregon's new smoking
ban
in bars and taverns appears to be drawing wide compliance around the state.
The Department of Human Services sent investigators to bars and bowling
alleys
this summer and found the majority of establishments were following the
state's
indoor smoking ban. It was approved by the 2007 Legislature in an effort
to protect
patrons of bars and taverns as well as people who work there from the effects
of
second-hand smoke. Some bars and taverns have said the smoking ban has
hurt
business. However, advocates say the health benefits of banning smoking
inside
those establishments outweigh those considerations.
