(R) The Chesapeake Bay Bridge, which connects Maryland's eastern and western
shores, is the most popular route
for tourists to reach the resort town of Ocean City. It is a major dual-span
bridge in the state of Maryland.
The writer has passed a newly constructed the parallel span of the 7 km-length
bridge by a new GM station wagon,
in April 1974.
Maryland has an estimated population of about 5,600,000. Immigration from outside
the United States
resulted in a net increase of 130,000 people, and migration within the
country produced a net loss of
the 13,000 people. Maryland is a life science hub with over 350 biotechnology
firms, making it the
third-largest cluster in the nation. Institutions and agencies located
throughout Maryland include the
firms of University system of Maryland, Johns Hopkins University, Food
and Drug Administration (FDA),
and National Institute of Health (NIH).

米国東部の「中部大西洋沿岸ベルト地帯」を構成する州で、海軍兵学校のあるアナポリスが州都である。
最大の都市はボルティモアであるが、南はワシントン市に隣接する。ベセスダ市はエリート官僚の
住む高級住宅地で、世界最大のＮＩＨ（アメリカ国立衛生研究所）がある。一人当たりの収入は全米
５番目といわれている。
筆者は1960年代初頭、ワシントンDC居住中にメリーランド州を頻繁に訪れている。当時、ボルチモア
市には古い建物の多い街並みが立ち並んでいたが、ワシントン市の周りには緑の住宅地と豊かな
農地とが広がっていた。チェサピーク湾が州の中央部分に入り込んでいるが、長い橋で両岸の地は
結ばれている。チェサピーク湾橋は全長7,000メートル、建設当時は世界で最も長い吊り橋であった。
筆者は1974年4月にニューヨークから首都ワシントンへ向かう途中でここを通過している。大西洋に
繋がる長い長い水面上をGMの新車で走行した時のとびきりの開放感は、30年以上経過した今でも
脳裏に深く刻み込まれている。

Maryland Clean Air Act of 2007
Maryland Governor signed the Clean Air Act of 2007, extending the state's
smoking ban to bars,
restaurants, and private social clubs. The statewide smoking ban, which
became effective February,
2008, and smoking is prohibited in the indoor areas open to the public.
Smoking is also prohibited
in government-owned or government-operated means of mass transportation.
Exceptions to this law include hotel rooms、as long as the total number
of smoking rooms is not
greater than 25%. A first violation will result in a written warning.
A second violation will result in
a civil penalty of $100, and each additional violation will result in a
penalty of not less than $250.
Bar and restaurant owners could avoid fines if people light up and the
owners can prove they
took steps to prevent indoor smoking, such as removing ashtrays and posting
no-smoking signs.
There is no smoking restriction at the outside.
メリーランド州でレストラン、カフェ、バーを全面禁煙に メリーランド州では1955年以降、オフィス、
室内職場での喫煙を法令で禁止して来たが、2008年2月、すべてのレストランおよびバーは
全面禁煙となった。屋外での喫煙規制はない。
