It is well known for its magnificent scenery of mountains, rivers,lakes and plains. Extreme weather is a not unusual occurrence in Colorado. Thunderstorms are common east of the Continental divide in the spring and summer. Colorado is one of the leading states in deaths due to lightning. Hail is a common sight in the mountains east of the divide. The highest temperature ever recorded in Colorado was 48°C on July 11, 1888, at Bennett, while the lowest was -51.7°C on February1, 1985, at Maybell. Denver is the state capital and the largest city in Colorado. The estimated population is about 600,000 in 2008. Rocky Mountain National Park is located in the north-central region of the state of Colorado, northwest of Boulder in the Rockies, includes the Continental Divide and the headwaters of the Colorado River. It features majestic mountain views, a variety of wild life and wooded forests. Pikes Peak is a mountain in the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains, 16 kms west of the city of Colorado Springs, Colorado. (R) Pikes Peak, 4302 m above sea level. コロラド州はアメリカ合衆国の中西部の州で、州最大の都市はロッキー山脈の東側にあるデンバーである。 州の人口は450万人以上、州の最低標高は1021ｍ、最高標高は4399ｍと高低差が大きい。デンバー市 の南110kmに位置するコロラド・スプリングスはコロラドは州第２の都市である。 ロッキー山脈で有名なパイクスピーク（ Pikes Peak ）は毎年、独立記念日に The Race to the Clouds （雲に向かう自動車レース）が催される。山頂は4301ｍあるが、標高差、1439ｍをモーターカーで一気に 駆け上がる。1960年代は勿論、今でも道路はほとんどガードレールのない無舗装の状態で、600ｍの 斜面を滑落する危険がある。レースを行う日以外は一般に開放されているが、高地では水の沸点が低く、 エンジンがオーバーヒートしやすいので、火災発生のリスクもある。 1962年9月、筆者はコロラド・スプリングスを訪れたとき、自分の車を麓に駐車し、パイクスピークには 世界一高いところに敷かれたアブト式登山鉄道、Pikes Peak Cog Railway を利用して頂上を目指した。 今では２両連結のヂーゼル車が走行しているが、当時は１両のみであった。今記憶していることは、 山をゆっくり登るにつれ視野がどんどん大きく広がって行ったのだが、山の頂上で味わったのは、 眺望のすばらしさというより、夏だというのに凍るように冷たい寒さであった。 Source: University of Texas Libraries Mesa Verde Mesa Verde National Park is the UNESCO World Heritage Site, located in the state of Colorado. The park features numerous ruins of homes and villages built by the ancient Pueblo people known as the Anasazi. The Anasazi made this stone village their home in the 1200A.D.. It is best known for several cliff dwellings including the Cliff Palace, which is thought to be the largest cliff dwelling in North America. Colorado Clean Indoor Air Act Statewide smoking ban:the Clean Indoor Air Act,effective July 2006, prohibits smoking in nearly all enclosed workplaces and indoor public places,including restaurants, bars, and taverns. The facilities exempted from the ban are cigar bars, up to 25% of hotel rooms, the smokers' lounge at the International Airport, casinos and workplaces which are not open to the public and which employ fewer than three employees. Colorado became the 13th state in the nation Saturday to ban smoking in bars, restaurants and most workplaces. Some cities, such as Pueblo, Boulder and Fort Collins, already had been local bans in place. Legislators heard evidence indicating smoking bans to have had a positive impact on the restaurant business but a negative effect on casinos. Airports logically could be exempted because they attract mostly non-resident of Colorado. A study done in the 18 months after Pueblo, Colorado enacted its smoking ban in 2003 shows a 27 percent decrease in hospital admissions for heart attacks for city residents. The study was led by Dr. Carl Bartecchi, a clinical professor of medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine in Denver. The decline in the number of heart attack hospitalization within the first year and a half after the nonsmoking ban that was observed in this study is most likely due to a decrease in the effect of secondhand smoke as triggering factor for heart attack. The Pueblo study gives a positive outlook to the future of healthcare in Colorado.
