 Arizona
The State of Arizona is one of the 'four corners states'. The state borders
share with the states of
New Mexico, Utah, Nevada, California and the 626 kms international border
with Mexico. In the state,
Grand Canyon, many other national forests, parks, monuments and Indian
reservations are within the
boundary. The capital and the largest city is Phoenix. The second largest
city in Arizona is Tucson.
Arizona is noted for its desert climate, exceptionally hot summers, and
mild winters. The northern area
of the state, with pine forests and mountain ranges, is cooler than the
lower deserts. Arizona is known
as the fastest growing state in the United States in the survey of 2006.

Due to its large area and variations in elevation the state has a wide
variety of localized climate conditions.
In the lower elevations, the climate is primarily desert, with mild winters
and hot summers. From late fall to
early spring, the average lowest temperatures are 16° C.. November through
February is the coldest months
with temperatures ranging from 4° C to 24° C, although occasional frosts
are not uncommon. About
midway through February, the temperatures start to rise again with warm
days, and cool breezy nights.
The summer months of June through September bring a dry heat ranging from
32°C to 49°C.

アリゾナ州と言えば先ず連想するのはサボテンと砂漠である。夏は非常に暑く、冬は温暖である。
人口の25％をヒスパニックが占め、20％近い人々がスペイン語を話す。砂漠に囲まれた州最大の
都市はフェニックスで、メキシコ国境近くにツーソンの町がある。人口は毎年、増加を続け、
フェニックスの2007年の推定人口は418万人に達する。カリフォルニア州から大量の半導体、
エレクトロニクス産業が流入してきたことで、急速に発展した。
アリゾナ州北部の低い山岳地帯は松林の多い地域であるが、筆者は有名なグランドキャニオン
国立公園に車で入ったのは１９６２年９月であった。先ず雄大な景観がどこまでも広がり、スケール
の大きさに圧倒される。朝日が登り始めると断崖の赤土がさらにその輝きを増して迫り来る。谷を
見渡せるところに腰を据えて遠くを眺めていると、人間って本当に小さな存在であると実感する。
Statewide smoking ban in Arizona
A smoking ban was enforced in public places from May 2007. It prohibits
smoking in all bars,
restaurants, and workplaces.
- These include restaurants, bars, grocery stores, or any establishment that serves
food.
- Office buildings and work areas such as meeting rooms, employee lounges,
- classrooms, and private offices
- Health care facilities, hospitals, health care clinics, and doctors' offices
- Company-owned or employer-owned vehicles during working hours
- if the vehicle is occupied by more than one person.
- Enclosed common areas in hotels and motels
- Lobbies, elevators, restrooms, reception areas, halls, stairways
- any other enclosed common-use areas in public and private buildings
- including condominiums and other multiple-unit residential facilities.
Arizona Department of health reported the responses of residents in Arizona,
one year after the smoking
ordinance became effective in May 2007. The announcement is as follows:
We are proud to state that
one year after the Smoke-Free Arizona Act went into effect, a high level
of compliance has been achieved.
Most employers responded well in creating the workplaces free from the
tobacco-smoke, while the number
of complaints declined significantly, this resulting in cleaner air for
Arizona's residents.
アリゾナ州のレストラン、カフェ、バーは全面禁煙 アリゾナ州では２００７年５月より受動喫煙防止法を
施行している。この法令により、以下の閉鎖空間内での喫煙が禁止され、全面禁煙となった。・・・
レストラン、バー、スパーマーケットなどの食料品店、従業員控え室、ラウンジを含む事務所、病院、
クリニックなどの医療施設、商業車に二人以上乗っていた場合、ホテルおよびモーテルの共用部分、
公共、私用を問わず、すべての住居用建物の共用部分、ロビー、エレベータ、トイレ、ホール、階段、
受付カウンターなどが対象となる。
アリゾナ公衆衛生局によると、条例施行１年後の評価で、非常に高いレベルで規制が州民に受け入れられた
ことが判明した。ほとんどの雇用者から禁煙化への協力を得て、法令に対する不満は大幅に減少し、より
きれいな空気の環境をアリゾナ州民に提供することが出来た。
