The VIA rail offers a completely smoke-free environment in all our trains,
as well as in all our stations.
The railway company wishes to thank smokers for their understanding and
cooperation.
To know if smoking is permitted at certain stops along the way, please
refer to your specific train route below:
Trains in the Quebec City-Windsor corridor
No smoking is permitted during station stops.
Montreal-Halifax ( the Ocean ) and Montreal-Gaspe
You will be able to smoke when the train stops in Charny, New Carlisle,
Campbellton and Moncton.
Toronto-Vancouver ( the Canadian )
You may get off the train to smoke during stops at Capreol, Hornepayne,
SiouxLookout, Winnipeg,
Saskatoon, Edmonton, Jasper and Kamloops.
Winnipeg-Churchill
Those wishing to smoke will be able to do so during regular station stops
at Pas, Thompson
and Gillam.
Enforcement of smoking regulations
VIA personnel are bound by law to enforce regulations.

No smoking policy in all TranzAlpine and TranzCoastal trains ( New Zealand)
The TranzAlpine train is reserved seating 'One Class Non Smoking' service.

A separate smokers' capsule is provided in Indian Pacific ( Australia )
Gold Kangaroo Lounge has a bar and separate smoking and non-smoking areas.
Red Kangaroo Diner and Buffet do not permit smoking. Smoking is allowed
in a separate smoker capsule,
that is provided next to the Daynighter Seat section of the train ( New
South Wales ).
No smoking policy in all trains in Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Denmark,
Germany, and Switzerland

Federal law prohibits smoking in a railway train in Portugal, Spain, France,
and Italy. Deutsche Bahn
banned smoking on all trains in the country. In 2005, total ban was enforced
for all trains in Switcherland.
No-smoking rule has been applied for train in Sweden, Norway and Denmark.
Total smoking ban was
enforced in trains and railway stations in Belgium. There is a separate
smoking booth in a long-distance
night train in Finland.

All public transport needs to display no-smoking symbol, in England, Wales,
Scotland and Northern Ireland.
No smoking policy in all trains in Taiwan, Thailand, Korea and in India

Federal law prohibits smoking in trains in Taiwan. India enforced a strict
smoking ban at rail station
and in trains. No smoking is allowed in Thailand. However, the writer found
a few smokers were
put the light on the rear deck of a train. Smoking is not permitted on
any Korean trains or stations,
including open railway plateforms.
NOTE: Smoking on trains is banned in many countries. With more and more
bans coming into effect,
train passengers should count on being able to smoke on the train. If smoking
is allowed at all,
there will be a separate smoking car. Checking with the train line directly
is the best way to
find out for sure their individual policies about smoking.
米国、カナダの広大な大地を走り抜ける大陸横断鉄道、縦断鉄道列車内の喫煙は禁止されている。
カナダ、バンクーバー・トロント間、4466 kmにわたる４日間にわたる旅 ( The Canadian ) でも、アムトラック、
シカゴ、ロスアンジェルス間の旅 ( Southwest Chief )、3日間の旅でも全面禁煙とされており、一日に２回
程度、指定された停車駅のホームで喫煙できるように規制されている。
一方、オーストラリアではシドニー・パース間のオーストラリア大陸横断鉄道、4352キロ、3日間走行する
列車(Indian Pacific train )に喫煙ブースが設けられているようだ。しかし、列車は週に2回しか運行して
いない。走行密度は日本の場合とは比較できないほど小さい。筆者は、2009年にフィンランドの首都、
ヘルシンキから北極圏に向かう夜行列車に二人用の小さな喫煙ブースがついていたのを確認している。
スウェーデンなど他のヨ−ロッパ諸国との乗り入れのない国であり、珍しい存在だ。こうした喫煙室は
そう遠くない将来は廃止の運命にある。
日本ではどうか。JR西日本、JR東海では運行時間が2時間を越えた路線では喫煙車両を温存、または
喫煙室を設置している。JR全社は夜行寝台に喫煙車両を連結している。関東地区の私鉄特急電車から
喫煙車両が撤去される中、関西地区の私鉄大手の近畿日本鉄道は喫煙ブースおよび喫煙車両の整備に
力を注いでいる。鉄道の全面禁煙化に正に逆行する動きである。
「アーバンライナー」に喫煙ブース、「伊勢志摩ライナー」に喫煙車両、1輌、その他の特急に1輌から2輌の
喫煙車両を連結して運行している。こうした喫煙中毒患者の為の非生産的なスペースを列車内に設けて
サービスと考えている。車掌などの乗務員に発癌物質を吸わせてそれが仕事だと平然としている。海外の
情勢にも目をつぶった鉄道会社の姿勢が問われる。こうした設備はあらゆる観点から見て有害無益であり、
ムダな投資である。しかし有効活用する手段がないわけでもない。喫煙車両が世界でも極めてまれな
存在となっている今日、車体中央部に「どくろ」と「タバコ」のロゴを入れて走らせれば、京都、奈良を
訪れる外国人観光客のまたとない被写体となるからだ。
Smoking kills
A few Japanese railway companies think the smoking space in a train is
the superb service to train passengers.
The Japan Railway Group, more commonly known as JR Group, consists of seven
for-profit companies
that took over most of the assets and operations of the government-owned
National Railways in 1987.
Smoking is prohibited in all trains of JR-Hokkaido and JR-East, except
for the night trains. A smoking
booth is provided in an express train of JR-Tokai, JR-West and JR-Shikoku.
In 2010, JR-Kyushu
prohibits smoking in a train. However, upon completion of a new Shinkansen-track
line, which connects
with Hakata, and a long-distance running to Shin-Osaka, the station of
JR-Tokai, JR-Kyushu railway
company will provide a smoking booth in their jointly operated Shinkansen
trains. JR Tokai and JR West
still have superexpress trains, which provide smoking seats. This policy
is criticized by many citizens
in Japan.
JR-Shikoku provides a smoking booth in almost all express trains. All JR
companies's night train in
Japan has a smoking-vehicle. All express trains privately operated by Kinki
Nippon Railway Co.
in Kansai district, which frequently connect Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, Nagoya
and Ise, have a smoking vehicle.
After March 2011, JR-Shikoku will close all smoking booths in an express
train. There will be no more
unhealthy space in the train vehicles.
