Nice, France
Nice is the fifth most populous city in France, after Paris, Marseille,
Lyon and Toulouse,
with a population of 349,000. It is located on the south east coast of
France on Mediterranean
Sea. The climate of nice is oceanic. The summer's holiday season lasts
for six months,
from May to October. Winters are not so cold, with average temperatures
of 13.4 °C
during the day, and 5.8 °C at night in the period from December to February.

The main railway station is Nice-Ville. The high speed TGV train connects
Paris and Nice
in less than six hours, while Marseille is reached in 2.5 hours. Nice also
has international
connections to Italy, Switzerland, Belgium, and Russia.

Nice tramway Line 1 links the northern and eastern suburbs via the city
centre. It opened in 2007.
It was originally to use the ground-level power supply third rail system
as used by Bordeaux tramway.
However, this was abandoned in favor of the more conventional overhead
power supply cables
providing 750V DC, unless the tram crosses the Place Massena and Garibaldi,
when it lowers
its pantograph and relies on its onboard nickel-metal hydride batteries
to cross these large open
spaces, where the wires would be an eyesore.

Smoking Ban in the Hotels in Nice
Le Meridien Nice possesses 301rooms and 17 prestigious rooms. All rooms
are non-smoking.
The guest rooms are above 4th floor, since Le Meridien and Mercure share
the hotel space
in the same building. Mercure Nice Promenade-des-Anglais provides 122 guest
rooms on
the 2nd and 3rd floor. All rooms are non-smoking. Hotel Westminister (
W-Hotel ) is
a smoke-free hotel, and no smoking is allowed inside. Le Royal has 140
guest rooms, and
all rooms are smoke-free. Grand Hotel Aston Clarion Nice has 145 rooms,
and all rooms are
non-smoking. Holiday Inn Nice has 129 rooms and in all rooms, smoking is
not allowed.
Palais De La Mediterranee has a total of 188 rooms. The number of smoking
and
non-smoking rooms are almost the same (50%, 50%). Smoking floors locate
on the 4th, 8th
and 9th floor. Non-smoking floors locate on the 5th, 6th and 7th floor.
Hotel West End Nice
has 25 smoking rooms in the total of 121 guest rooms. The ratio of smoking
to the total
is 20.7%. Le Grimaldi has 10 smoking rooms out of the total of 46. The
percentage of
smoking to the total is 21.7%.
There are two hotels within walking distance: Hotel Ibis Nice Centre Gare
and Best Western
Hotel Riviera. The Ibis hotel has 199 rooms, and it provides smoking rooms
in the ratio of
two, against six non-smoking, which means the percentage of smoking to
the total is 25.0%.
Best Western Riviera has 48 rooms and 24 smoking and 24 non-smoking, that
presents
the ratio of a half and half (50% each).

Avenue and tram
ニースは、フランスの南東部に位置する都市で 地中海・コート・ダジュールに面する、世界的に有名な
保養地・観光都市である。 マルセイユとイタリアのヴェンティミリアを結ぶフランス国鉄の鉄道路線が通る。
タンド峠を越えてイタリアのクーネオに至るタンド線が分岐する。このほかプロヴァンスの山岳地帯へ
向かうプロヴァンス鉄道の起点でもある。
市内交通として路面電車があるが、1953年に廃止された後、2007年新たに路線が建設された。その
路線で、市内中心部のマセナ広場とガリバルディ広場を通る区間は、架線給電ではなく、蓄電池を
使用した区間となっている。 都市景観を重視した電気方式を採用していることが評価されており、
建設に合わせた街路樹の植生や、沿線にアーティストによる現代芸術作品を設置するなどの
「街の衣替え」の実践を行っている。
今回のホテル喫煙客室調査で意外にも多くのホテルが建物内の喫煙スペースを廃止し全面禁煙と
していることが分かった。ニース市内で完全禁煙を実施しているホテルを以下に示した。レ・メリディアン・
ホテルは「フランスの法律でそうなっている」と言い張ったが、市内の他のホテルの状況は把握して
いないようだ。台湾や米国ボストン市などでは行政の関与があり、法律で喫煙客室を含めホテル内で
の喫煙を禁止しているが、その他の国では従業員の立ち入らない喫煙客室は、ホテル側の自主的な
判断で決められている。カナダ・ブリティシュコロンビア州、アルバータ州では全室禁煙であることが
スタンダードとなっており、ホテル側も利用客側も、喫煙空間を屋内に設けることへの拒否反応が
顕著になっている。
健康に留意している人は、喫煙客室を設けているホテルは、たとえ予約時に禁煙ルームを確保できた
としても、通路などに有害煙 が漏れていることがあるので、回避したほうがよい。これからのホテルの
選択基準の重要な指標に、喫煙客室の有無とその比率とが加えられるべきと考えられる。
