New Jersey is a state in the Mid-atlantic region of the United Stated. It lies largely within the sprawling most densely populated Metropolitan areas of New York and Philadelphia. New Jersey Smoke-Free Air Act The Legislature finds and declares that: tobacco is the leading cause of preventable disease and death in the State and the nation, and tobacco smoke constitutes a substantial health hazard to the nonsmoking majority of the public. The separation of smoking and nonsmoking areas in indoor public places and workplaces does not eliminate the hazard to nonsmokers if these areas share a common ventilation system; and, therefore, subject to certain specified exceptions, it is clearly in the public interest to prohibit smoking in all enclosed indoor places of public access and workplaces. Smoking is prohibited in an indoor public place or workplace, except as otherwise provided in this act. Smoking is forbidden in any area of any building of, or on the grounds of, any public or nonpublic elementary or secondary school, regardless of whether the area is an indoor public place or is outdoors. The person having control of a hotel, motel or other lodging establishment may permit smoking in up to 20% of its guest rooms. In 1978, the New Jersey legislature approved casino gambling in Atlantic City. At that time, Las Vegas was the only mega-casino resort. By 1978, Atlantic City was on the decline. It was no longer the seaside resort that it once was. With the institution of casino gambling, Atlantic City has come back as a resort city. Many lie along the Atlantic City Boardwalk, the longest boardwalk throughout the Jersey Shore. Atlantic City is considering delaying the start of a total smoking ban at its 11 casinos due to economic weakness and plunging revenue.The ban, which was approved in April after a year-and-a-half battle between casino workers and gambling hall operators, is set to take effect Oct. 15, 2008.
