A Beautiful land of Upper Peninsula of Michigan
The Upper Peninsula of Michigan is the northern of the two major land masses that make up
the U.S. state of Michigan. It is commonly referred to as the Upper Peninsula, or Upper Michigan.
More casually it is known as the land "above the Bridge, above the Mackinac Bridge linking
the two peninsulas. It is bounded on the north by Lake Superior, on the east by
the St. Mary'sRiver, on the southeast by Lake Michigan and Lake Huron, and on the
southwest by Wisconsin. Winters tend to be long, cold, and snowy for most of the peninsula,
and because of its northern latitude, the daylight hours are short, and around eight hours
between sunrise and sunset in the winter. The Upper Peninsula contains almost a quarter
of the land area of Michigan. However, residents are just three percent of its total population.

The Tahquamenon River is a 151 km long blackwater river in Michigan that flows in
a generally eastward direction through the eastern end of the Upper Peninsula.
It drains approximately 2,120 square km of the Upper Peninsula. It begins
in Tahquamenon Lakes and empties into Lake Superior near the village of Paradise.
The highway M-123 runs alongside a portion of the river.
The river is best known for the Tahquamenon Falls, a succession of two waterfalls
in Tahquamenon Falls State Park in total of about 22 m in height. Because the head
stream of the river is located in a boreal wetland that is rich in cedar, spruce and
hemlock trees, the river's waters carry a significant amount of tannin in solution, i.e.,
it is a blackwater river, and is often brown or golden-brown in color. The Tahquamenon
Falls are thus acclaimed as being the largest naturally dyed or colored waterfall in
the United States. The state park preserves the falls area and some 39 km of the river.

The Mackinac Bridge is connecting Michigan's Upper and Lower Peninsulas at St, Ignace
and Mackinaw city. It is the third longest suspension bridge in the world. The Akashi Kaikyo
Bridge in Japan was completed in 1998. It became the first in its length, which is 3,909 m,
among the suspension bridge in the world. The Great Belt Bridge, Denmark, which also
opened in 1998, is the second suspension bridge in the world, with the suspension length
of 2720 m. The total length of the Mackinac Bridge is 8.038 m. The height of the roadway
at mid-span is about 61 m above water level.
