  Smoking ban at all Sheraton hotels and Marriott Hotels in
United States and Canada
In response to public information regarding the adverse effects and dangers
of second-hand
smoke, requests for non-smoking guest rooms have been on the rise. All
the Sheraton
and Four Points hotels in the United States and Canada, banned smoking
in public areas, such
as lobbies and restaurants. In October of 2006, Marriott Hotel announced
all 2,300 hotels in
the United States and Canada, will be 100% smoke-free. This is the largest
move in the
hotel industry to date, affecting over 400,000 guest rooms. Westin is the
first hotel chain
to ban smoking at all 77 locations in the countries of United States, Canada
and the Caribbean.
Marriott already had 90 percent of its guest rooms designated as non-smoking
before
the ban was announced, and Westin had 92 percent smoke-free rooms. It was
performed
in January of 2006. It brought a benefit to hotels with all rooms designated
as non-smoking
simplifies tracking available room inventory. Smoking is no longer permitted
in guest rooms,
restaurants, bars and all other indoor public spaces.

完全禁煙化を開始し、オーストラリア、フィジー、スコットランドでも禁煙化に踏み切っている。
スターウッド・ホテルグループは今回の取り組みにともない、喫煙できた約8000室を全てクリーニング
する。匂いが残りやすい家具や、柔らかな部分、堅い側面、アレルギーの原因物質が残る壁や
カーペット、エアフィルターの交換とエアコンを徹底的に洗浄するという。なお、屋外にある指定
場所での喫煙は認めるとしている。
マリオットホテルでも2006年10月にホテルルームの100％禁煙化を発表している。完全禁煙化により
400,000 の客室が禁煙ルームとなる。なおマリオットグループにはRitz-Carlton Hotel も含まれる。
ウエスティンホテルではすでに2006年1月の段階で禁煙化を実行している。このアナウンスメントは、
その後多くの個別ホテルに波及し、完全禁煙化に移行する動きが加速した。

 Most UK hotels are removing smoking guest rooms from their facilities.
A smoking ban introduced in UK in 2007 was availed of introducing a smoke-free
rule in
their hotel rooms, as well as restaurants and bars. The Travelodges, Premier
Travel Inns
and Malmaison are among those that will banish smoking from rooms and public
areas by
the beginning of 2008, forcing visitors to stand outside to light up. While
saying the move
is down to demand by many hotel guests, the chains will also save millions
in cleaning,
as well as fabric repair and replacement costs.
Hilton Hotels also plans to eliminate smoking from its 75 UK hotels following
the
ban enforced in July 2007, keeping just one per cent of rooms available
for smoking guests.
'It is still important that our customers have a choice' said Hilton's
communications
director. Three of Hilton newer hotels, Hilton London Canary Wharf, Hilton
London
Tower Bridge and Hilton Manchester Deansgate, have already been operating
smoke-free since their openings in the year of 2006. There was no detrimental
effect on business.

January 2007 Choice Hotels ASA becomes the first Scandinavian smoke-free
hotel chain.
5,500 smoke rooms are these days made ready as non-smoking rooms.
All the 23,000 choice rooms in Choice 152 Scandinavian hotels will be smoke-free.
In a survey conducted among Choice, guests more than 80 percent want completely
smoke-free hotels. We want to offer our guests a guest facility eliminating
a tobacco
hazard and our employers a working environment in which prohibits smoking.
Choice
has removed the opportunity to book smoke rooms from their web page. Demand
for
smoke rooms is almost zero.
2007年1月、こうしたホテル全面禁煙化への対策は北欧でも見受けられた。チョイスホテルグループは
100％スモークフリー宣言を行い、グループ傘下のコンフォート、クオリティ、クラリオンホテルから
喫煙室は完全に消失した。英国でもホテルから喫煙客室を排除しようとする大きな動きがある。

Starwood has expanded its smoke-free initiative to all the Sheraton and
Four Points Hotels
in the United States and Canada. All 8,000 smoking-allowed hotel rooms
in 300 hotels,
as well as public areas such as lobbies and restaurants, are affected.
The hotels will go
free from tobacco smoke by December, 2008. Marriott announced that by October,
2006,
all 2,300 hotels in the United States and Canada will be 100 percent smoke-free.
This is
the largest move in the hotel industry to date, affecting over 400,000
guest rooms.
Back in January of 2006, Westin became the first hotel chain to ban smoking
at all 77 locations
in the United States, Canada and the Caribbean. Smoke is no longer permitted
in guest rooms,
restaurants, bars and all other indoor public spaces. Guests are still
permitted to smoke on
balconies and other outdoor areas. Since the Westin smoking ban was announced,
many
independent hotels announced similar bans across the United States.
