Bangkok
The city of Bangkok is the capital, largest urban area and primary city
of Thailand.
In the span of over two hundred years, Bangkok has been the political,social
and
economic center of not only Thailand but for much of South East Asia as
well.
Its influence in the arts, politics, fashion education and entertainment,
as well as
being a business, financial and cultural center of Asia has given Bangkok
the status
of a global city.
Bangkok is the city of population with approximately 8,200,000 registered
residents,
but due to large unregistered influxes of migrants from the North East
of Thailand
and of many nations across Asia, the population of greater Bangkok is estimated
at nearly 15 million people.

タイ王国の首都、バンコク。東南アジア屈指の国際都市である。タイ経済の
中心であるのみならず、ラオス、カンボジア、ミャンマーを含むインドシナ半島
の経済圏の中心である。スカイトレイン、サイアム駅中心としたサイアム・
パラゴン（Saim Paragon）近くには大型商業施設が立ち並び、タイ王国の
トレンド発信地ともなっている。日本企業の進出は第２次世界大戦以前に
始まり、日本の有名企業の名前はどこにでも見受けられる。観光産業は
タイの経済の要でもあり、歴史ある寺院も多く、欧米からも多くの観光客を
迎え入れている。

バンコクには「トゥクトゥク」と呼ばれるオート三輪車がある。非常に便利であるが、
渋滞の中を割り込み走行したり、反対車線を走ったり、荒っぽいスピード運転の
ことが多いので,ふるい落とされないようにしっかりとつかまっていることが肝要だ。
ひどい排気ガスの中を走るときはのどが痛くなる。料金を交渉して乗るが、一旦
値引きしても着いたときは値引き前の料金を請求するワルもいるので注意。
ロングテイルボート（long tail boat）というチャーターの水上タクシーはものすごい
速度で波しぶきを上げ、あっという間に目的地に着く。私有地の船着き場では、
通過税のような金を一人当たり20バーツ請求される（チップのような性格なのだろう）。

may inhale a polluted air.

Chatuchak weekend market in Bangkok is the largest market in Thailand.
It covers
1.13 square km. and contains upward of 5,000 stalls. Most stalls open on
Saturdays
and Sundays. The market offers a wide variety of products, including household
items, clothing, Thai handicrafts,religious artifacts,collectibles, food
and live animals.
バンコクの鉄道施設を見て歩いているうちに、スカイトレインの終点、モーチット駅手前に
低層の巨大家屋群が見えたので立ち寄ってみた。全く知らないで訪れたのだが、そこが
有名なバンコク名物、チャトゥチャク市場（Chatuchak Weekend Market）であった。週末
でなくとも毎日開けている店は少なくない。何でもござれと、植木、草花、雑貨、絵画、
骨董品、装飾品、土産物、コンピュータソフトなどが、ところ狭しと並べられている。
値段は交渉次第だ。鉄道はスカイトレイン、Mo Chut 駅か地下鉄 Chatuchak Park駅で
下車すればよい。

タイ国有鉄道の施設は古くお粗末であるが、天地の差のようにバンコク市内を
走る高架鉄道や地下鉄はすばらしい。高速道路は市街地を縦横に横切って
建設されているが、周りのビルは新旧入り乱れて立ち並ぶ。地図上ではごく
近くに思える場所も実際に歩いてみるととても遠く感じられ、都市自体の大きさ
を実感させられる。高速道路の料金は普通車は７０バーツである。市中ガソリン
スタンで調べたハイオクガソリン91の価格は１リットル16.09バーツであり日本
での価格の３分の１ほどである。バスはエアコンがあるかないかで料金が違う。
廃車寸前と思われるようなバスも走っている。
Jim Thompson House Museum, Bangkok
The Jim Thompson House is the home of James H.W. Thompson, a self made
American undertaker, who was the founder of the world renowned the Jim
Thompson Thai Silk Company. Thompson's achievements during his 25 year
stay in Thailand have won him much fame as the "Legendary American
in
the land of Thai".
