Timeline of Fronela

Copyright c1997 Peter Metcalfe, save for the copyright bits quoted from other credited sources which is (ha ha) at least 90% of the document. But then that's them Great Poets for ya... Written 21 Jan 1998

Commentary:: This chronology contains events limited to the lands which it describes. For instance, the fact that the Battle of Tanian's victory was fought in 718 ST is common knowledge yet it is not recorded here due to it having occurred outside the area. I have stuck mainly to published material and have shied away from interpretations and interpolations. If you have any questions, corrections and/or mindless trivia that you feel compelled to share with me upon reading this, then please do not hesitate to contact me. Lastly I should acknowledge that this article is largely a reworking of a similar article by Mark Sabulaskas that appeared in Codex #2.

Revisions: Given the scanty knowledge about some periods in history, this document will almost certainly be revised. If I get some more dates, then I will add them dates in. In such a case, this section will contain a brief precis of the revisions to date.

15/2 Added entry for 695 ST.

25/1 New entries for 437 ST and 947 ST. Following discussions with Nick Brooke, entries for 922 ST, 1384, 1388 ST, 1396 ST and 1500 ST have been revised. Added Notes on Arrolian Cities.

Timeline of Fronela:

0 ST The Dawn [G:CotHW#1]

33 ST Hrestol martyred in Sog City [USC] Comment: Codex#2 claims that the first Hrestoli Churches were set up in Akem as early as 1 ST but I feel this is Hrestoli propaganda given that Hrestol does not set foot in Sog City before 33 ST - PHM.

385 ST Scattered holdings of Fronelan Monotheists begin the process of political integration [C#2]. Comment: I take this to indicate that the Silver Empire has just disintegrated following a failed attack on Brithos (possibly brought about by Nysaloran ideals?). This explains the Brithini attack on Arolanit.

852 ST Riots in Morian are ruthlessly put down by the God Learners. The cruelty of the suppression sparks a rebellion against Jrustela [C#2].

855 ST Loskalmi troops are withdrawn from the rest of Fronela in an attempt to restore order. The Soldiers refuse to attack their countrymen and join the rebellion. Soon the whole of Fronela rises in general revolt against the God Learners [C#2].

919 ST Shah Nadar the Avenger of Carmania leads troops on an extensive raid of eastern fronela as far as Eastpoint [C#2].

920 ST The Closing radiates from Brithos, striking hundreds of merchant ships simultaneously and sending them out to sea. The few ships which escaped brought terrible news across the Neolimi sea. A Loskalmi Fleet confirmed that an invisible wall was slowly moving out from Brithos at 300 kilometres per year [G:CotHW#1].

922 ST The Closing reaches Fronela pushing everything right up Ozur's bay so that the river of Sog City was clogged with wreckage [G:CotHW#1]. The Waertagi Cityship berthed in the Drydock is wrecked and its crew marooned. These crew were the ancestors of the Blues of Sog City.[USG]

1462 ST Riverjoin converts to the Lunar Way [G:CotHW#2]. Comment: Making sense of this is impossible without any indication where Valmark was. My guess was that it was located around Eastpoint. The conquest of Eastpoint would then be a Carmanian expansion down the Janube against the despised Arrolians. Riverjoin would then have converted to owing to an influx of refugees from Eastpoint.

1470 ST Eastpoint self-liberates itself from the Lunar Empire [G:CotHW#2]. Comment: The cause of this self-liberation appears to have been the White Bear Empire which was active at this time according to the Lunar Wane Chronicle. Presumably an army just got mulched - PHM.

1500 ST Siglat, son of Snodal crowned King of Loskalm. Later in his reign, he recieves a vision of Saint Hrestol called Siglat's Dream which led to the institution of New Hrestoli Idealism as the state religion of Losklam -- and also to the canonisation of that saintly monarch. [G:CotHW#2].

Notes

The Arrolian Cities

The quasi-nordic names of the Arrolian cities settled by the Lunars are unsatisfactory as 'Dolebury' (the Carmanian Capital). It seems probable that these cities are intended to be the modern Arrolian Cities (ie Eastpoint, Galastar, Southbank and Riverjoin). Since Galastar is stated to a henotheistic Orlanthi city (ignoring questions on whether it worshipped Orlanth or another God with a similar name), it cannot be one of the Lunar Cities. My guess is that it was the capital of 'Valmark' although Codex #2 makes no mention of this possibility, although it is silent on historical events between the return of Galastar's bones and the Ban.

We know that two out the three cities were entered into and the third was founded. It seems probable that the pattern of settlements was progressively downriver from Galastar. Thus Holvburg which was entered in 1384 ST is probably Eastpoint and Starvdyke which was entered in 1388 ST is the City of Southbank.

RIverjoin would then logically be Norri's Hill but there exists a problem. The description of Riverjoin states that it converted to the Lunar religion in 1462 which conflicts with its alleged founding by refugee lunars in 1396 ST. My solution is that the original city was a mixture of Orlanthi/Lunar settlers. Much later, a second wave of lunar refugees (fleeing Carmanian oppression following the seizure of Eastpoint) managed to swamp the city and the Lunar Way became the official creed soon afterwards.
