日記より抜粋

2001年9月11日アメリカ時間早朝。
テロリスト達は自爆テロを決行。世界貿易センタービルおよびペンタゴンの崩壊。
世界中の航空全線で欠航および延期。

Zebrafaceは9月7日3時および10日10時にイサリーズ社を訪問した。
オークランドとサンフランシスコを結ぶ新式地下鉄BARTに乗り、駅West Oaklandで下車。
ここからバス「Army Base行き」で陸軍ベースへ向かう。

グレッグ氏の手紙にいわく：

I get here by BART and bus, or by BART and walking. It is easy.
Come from SF to Oakland, and when the BART come up out of the tunnel
underneath the bay look to the left side of the BART, Down below you'll see
a complex of buildings that is the former Oakland Army Base. We are in
there. You will see, tooo, a large interchange for highways down there,
which you will pass through.
Get to the West Oakland BART station and get off.
You will exit through the ticket gates, and turn left out of the door. There
is a bus stop for 13 Oakland Army Base.
Take the 13 bus (cost is $1.60, including a transfer, and exact change is
required).
You want to get off at the fifth bus stop. The bus will depart from the BART
station and go along a road where the huge post office building is on the
left side of the street, and the right side is a seedy part of impoversihed
Oakland neighborhood. It will pass two bus stops on that stretch.
It will then go down a huge highway interchange, underneath the free way and
underneath the railroad tracks, and then turn right around a larger curve.
Two bus stops are on that curve, one when you start it and one when you end
it.
The bus will keep going after the currve and strighten out. At that time
pull the rop to signal the drive you want to get off at the next stop. It
will pull over and let you out.
You'll be on a sidewalk, and see a gate that goes through the long fence. Go
through the gate and there's a building there. Go around the building to the
left and you'll see on the other side a doorway with a bell and next to the
bell a list of names (Wizards Attic, Chaosium, Green Knight, and Issaries).
Buzz the bell, tell whoever answers the door that you are there to see me,
and they will either bring you to me or ask you to wait and get me. You will
be here, and we will meet.

であるが、これをZebは普通のオークランドの地図で探して、果たせなかった。
グレッグが言うには、そこは最近まで軍の圧力でいわば透明な場所にされていたそうだ。
「クールだろ？」「クールですねえ。でもあまりそういう風に驚かせないで。」

バスの本数は一時間に一本くらいだろう。
Zebの最初にイサリーズを探したときには、なにしろ地図がなく（軍の機密だろうか？）
知っている人もいないようなのでかなり苦労した。幸いオーランスの機嫌はよく、
空にはヘラーの羊しかいなかった。兵隊のひとりが辛抱強く彼に教えたのは僥倖だった。

イサリーズはグレッグ・スタフォードを社長とし、
スティーヴン・マーティンを社員に抱える。
彼らの仕事は多くがファン活動に負っている。これには良い面と悪い面が並立する。
（安定のみ重要視してはならない。）3時ちょっとすぎにZebが会ったとき、グレッグ
はちょうど帰るまぎわだった。
(その日はスティーヴンはいなかった。）
彼はオーランシーの族長に対面するときのように贈り物を差し出し、
こころよく彼はテニスンの詩集を受け取ったようだった。
（きざたらしいなどというひとがいるだろうね。
彼がペンドラゴンの作者でもある事を忘れてはいけない。）
ZebはGregの寛大なふるまいに心動かされて、GTAInitiateにこのときなった。

彼は二度結婚している。最初の結婚で彼は二人の息子と一人の娘を得た。
二人目の息子であるJasonは今年High Schoolを卒業したらしい。
Zebはいくつか彼に個人的な質問を(失礼にも）したが、彼はそのどれにも親切に答えた。
（もちろん誠実と正直はかならずしも同じではない。）

一つの建物内にイサリーズ、グリーンナイト、ケイオシアム、そしてWizard Atticの
事務所が詰め込まれている。
表玄関はWAで、そこからイサリーズに入るには
商品倉庫を抜けて入らなければならない。イサリーズ事務所の裏に
「秘密の抜け道(Shortcut)があり、そこから旧陸軍のバーがあったところに抜ける。
さらに裏口には軍のフェンスを抜けて、バス停に
抜ける秘密の出入り口があり、彼はしばしばそこを利用しているようだった。
グレッグはそこで働いているときにはお昼を食べないらしい。
(近くに食堂とかないみたいだし）昼はたいてい菓子やスナックで済ませるそうだ。
「それは身体に悪いですよ。」

Zebの二度目の訪問。今度はスティーヴンがいて彼にコーヒーを入れた。
スティーヴンは鋭い目をした男だった。(文字通りの意味で。）
「君は日本ではコーヒー党だったかね」
「こっち(新大陸）に来るまでは違いましたね」すると笑っていた（なぜ？）
Zebがグレッグに先日まとめたレポートをFDで差し出すと、彼はううむとうなり
（たぶんZebの下手な英語にたいして唸ったのだろう。）
Wordで編集をして、今度は自分で答えを書き始めた。
Zebは隣で口出しをしながら話をする。
スティーヴンは細長い部屋のもう一方の端にいて、忙しく
(社長がZebの相手をしている間に）二人分の仕事をこなしていた。
Issariesには毎日すごい量の
メールが配信されるようで、それらを二人で全部読む余裕はとてもなさそうだった。

Glorantha Encyclopaediaの出版について話しているときに、
三部作とWork in Progressの推敲はどれくらい手が加えられているか？
できれば完成形が見たいものだ。
Zebがそう言うと、「そうだね、私も見てみたい。」
きっとアーカットも彼のように魅力的だったに違いない(笑）
